Medical Q&A #8 - The Digestive System

Common question.

My parents always refer to stomachaches as dyspepsia. I insist there is no such ailment. Who is right?

Your parents are. Dyspepsia (disturbed digestion) is an actual condition also referred to as an indigestion , acid indigestion, upset stomach, heartburn or billiousness; it is defined by a cluster of symptoms involving food digestion.

The symptoms are not usually caused by any serious disease. If you have any of them and your doctor has ruled out a serious cause, stop worrying; instead, be on the alert for any change.Change - whether in frequency, intensity or nature of the discomfort - signals the need for another checkup.
